Identification Codes
| Vehicles which leave their country of origin are expected to carry an international identification plate. Official codes were appointed by international convention in 1909, and updated in 1926. Since 1949 this has been placed under the control of the United Nations, and an update occurred in 1968. Plates are usually a white oval with black letters. Some codes are unofficial, and both official and unofficial codes appear to be in use for some countries. You may find more than one code for each country.
